As a Certified Public Accountant and corporate controller, I am the only truly qualified candidate for this office.

The incumbent, Dan Hynes, is a health care lawyer and a professional politician, choosing to focus on politics versus strong financial management. The office of Comptroller has been used in the past as a springboard for higher office (e.g., Roland Burris for Governor, Dawn Clark-Netsch for Governor, Loleta Didrickson for Secretary of State) by non-finance people. Dan Hynes, having indicated that he would like to be the Democratic Party's 2004 candidate, is continuing the same misuse of the office."

Our current budget is a mess because politicians, rather than accountants, are managing our state's finances. According to the Daily Herald, the Illinois state budget had increased 45 percent in the last four years, from $36 billion to $52 billion. This year's budget was increased again, to $54 billion.

I intend to put a stop to the frivolous spending that has caused this massive increase. My top priorities are:

  1. balancing the state budget through spending cuts (versus tax increases);
  2. blocking payment of invoices for member initiatives (pork!) and for items that are frivolous or unconstitutional; and
  3. streamlining the state's financial offices by combining the office of comptroller and treasurer, saving Illinois taxpayers $60 million annually.

I bring a long track record of sound financial management and credentials to the office, while my opponents do little more than politicize the state's finances.

*Candidates for State Comptroller will air on the segment which runs on Monday 10/28 starting at 7:30 pm, midnight, 2 am, and 5 am. It will also run on Sunday, Nov. 3, starting at 2:30 pm. For times and dates for all races covered on WTTW, click here.
